Miami Tribe of Oklahoma

Many years ago the Miami tribe of Oklahoma, through the leadership of Miami tribal member Daryl Baldwin, began working to bring the Miami language back to life. It had not been spoken since the 60’s. Daryl discussed the need for a Miami language dictionary with Governor Chuck Stocking. Through his Leadership, funds were raised to get the Miami dictionary into print. The presentation being forwarded to you shows what has been done, and what is being done, to restore this ancient language among Miami descendants. The Miami tribe formerly occupied land along the Maumee River into Indiana, most notably Ft. Wayne, which was formerly known by the Miamis as Kekionga. It is my hope that the video will highlight an unusual Rotary project from the past and possibly develop interest in another project with the Miami tribe who share history with Rotarians in District 6600. Special thanks to George Ironstrack, a Miami tribal member who has shared the video with me, and who holds a prominent position with the Myaamia project at Miami University at Oxford.
