19 years ago, our family was lucky enough to host a Rotary Youth Exchange student from Denmark into our home for six months. At the time, our youngest daughter was just ten and our older children had left home.

What a wonderful learning experience for my wife, me and for our daughter! In subsequent years, we hosted students in our home for three months from Turkey, Austria and Brazil. I got involved with our district’s youth exchange program.

Eventually in 2006-2007, our youngest daughter earned her way into our district’s outbound program and spent a year in Austria with Rotary Youth Exchange.

I encourage all Rotarians to learn more about Youth Exchange, to bear in mind that we have an opportunity to provide a wonderful learning / scholarship experience for high school students between the ages of 15 and 19 (depending on the destination country). If you know a student who might like to take advantage of a year abroad, contact our district youth exchange committee (see below).

And, for those wanting to bring the opportunity to learn more about a culture, help share our culture with a foreign student and to expand your horizons, consider hosting a student in your home. Host assignments are generally for 3 months. Students do generally stay in a single community (and school) during their stay. Contact the district youth exchange committee (see below).
