This week’s program is brought to us by Marvin Whitfield. “In today’s society, we often view at-risk kids without genuinely understanding the causes of their behavior. They are often seen as threats to society and thrown into the Criminal Justice System or, at times, unjustifiably killed by the same system. I spent almost three decades in law enforcement, placing youths within the system based on their actions without truly understanding why they committed them. Now, as the CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwestern Ohio, I am dedicating the rest of my life to keeping them out of the system. Why, you ask? Being trauma-informed, I now understand the causation of their negative actions. Additionally, upon self-reflection, I began to understand some of my past negative behavior. The only difference between them and me is I had support. I hope by sharing this video with my peers, you too will become trauma-informed and help break the cycle plaguing our communities. ”
